Oswald No-Till Farm Cleghorn, IA | Interesting,
I was out walking fields and Dad has been out in the field near his place and we see plenty of blanks. I call them mis-fires in that you can often find a seed but no plant. Casual observation suggests more of this with DKC than Pioneer. I thought maybe they were blending in some below standard product to stretch supplies. The 52-04 seems better than some of the others and it was winter production. I have a little 62-54 that is the worst. Some of the 53-78 and 55-09 aren't that great either and they are RIB... hmmmmmmm?
Frankly, you are right, I saw the same thing with 52-62 a couple years ago when doing a population study split planter with 52-59. At the higher pops no difference in yield but lower (planting) pop there was. When you counted final harvest stand the 52-62 was less to begin with so lower drop resulted in clearly lower ear count which likely fell below yield threshold.
Keep them honest Pilgrim. Good observations!
