SC Wisconsin | We've got the Petsafe "Stubborn Dog" system - works well for our German Shephard but I did spend a week training him. He knows exactly where that line is, and has not crossed it yet. I've heard the key is training, and it took him a day or two to realize that the beeping proceeded the shocking. It also took him a while to realize he easily could stop the shocking by backing up. I've never let him get far enough through the fence's field to realize that the shocking will stop if he runs far enough through it. The only way he leaves is in a vehicle.
I've seen him test it a time or two when there was something on the other side he really wanted to get to like visitors or another dog. He will get shocked, yelp, and return to safety. I've got no illusions that he wouldn't go through it some day if he wanted to bad enough, and still lock him up if I know a situation like that might happen.
I put in 1000 feet and rented a cable layer from Home Depot for something like $60 for the day. That is the only way I'd install a dog fence. It was quick and painless.
