New Brunswick, Canada | We had a fairly well worn 489 for a few years, I wouldn't take a free one unless it was in spectacular condition. It had no end of problems and is difficult to work on compared to older open styles. The main belts are always burning up, little chains breaking, reel pulley split in two, broken knife head bolts, a half dozen grease points that are very difficult to get to for the float related driveshafts, tongue cracking near pivot, rollers delaminating and wrapping badly, couldn't keep the roller tension bolts from seizing even when stored inside 100% of time.
I bought a high acre used Pottinger Novacat 305 disc mover to replace it and couldn't be happier. I'm sure that will change once the first bearing wipes the bar but knock on wood the last 3 seasons have been a dream with it. | |
