If you are in rocky conditions having the head float independent of the rolls is an advantage, IMO. Head floats better/reacts quicker = fewer broken guards. We ran a 489 for years and hardly ever broke a guard which was an improvement over the former machine which I think was a 488 (it's been a while). 489 was a pretty bulletproof machine.
