| I've flown electric powered sailplanes, motor in the nose with a folding prop, and 70 watts/lb will climb to 500-600 feet in about 15-20 seconds. The motor is stopped, prop folds, glider soars. 125watts will take one stright up. So if you had a six foot plane at say 7# plus 1# payload, 60 watts/lb or 480 watts would fly it fine. That's a $300 motor, battery, esc control weighing about 20 oz. The new lipo or 123a batteries have amazing power/ weight ratios.
