Problem with figuring that is it depends on how high and wide your pile is. I can hire a covering service that includes labor and twine for $.13/square foot. I own tires and buy plastic. When I figure $1.50/ton packing for tractors and the plastic and covering charge, I come up with just under $3/ton to pile. Bagging is costing me $6.50/ton. 3.5% additional loss on a pile adds up to the $3.50 extra for bagging. I usually run 4-6% loss on piles and 3-5% on bags. I am going to try piling this year on first cutting alfalfa and then bagging other cuttings. Should have a pretty good idea which way I will go for all of it next year. I also bought a JD9520 with blade, so I figure we need to put it to use and see how much better it packs than the 8410 and 8420.
