West Central Iowa
It took me awhile to find one but look up this registration number on the AAA website: 17198249

Below the pedigree and above the EPD's is the official statement about being a possible carrier. Both the bull in question & his mother Ebony Hills Bando 456, are both untested (therefore potential carriers) because S A F 598 Bando 5175 is CAC. If his mother (Ebony Hills Bando 456) were to be tested and come back CAF (defect free) then he would be considered "clean by pedigree".

Where it really gets tough is when they are unable to acquire DNA from the "oldest" generations that are expected to have the defect. Look up AAA #9958208. He is CAC (a carrier) but his sire is CAF (free). There is apparently no DNA for the dam (Freestate Barbara) to prove that she is a carrier, but unless the mutation started with Premier Independence, then Freestate Barbara HAS TO be CAC. Unfortunately though, any calf that Freestate Barbara ever had will never be considered a potential carrier unless someone can prove with DNA that she is a carrier and get the CAC designation. Her calves can be tested individually (as Premier Independence was), but the challenge is that those people who want to leave their head in the sand and ignore the problem can do so while still propagating potential carrier offspring by just not testing. Fortunately, newer and current genetics mostly steer clear of these rare issues and they are EXTREMELY unlikely, but not impossible.

Hopefully that was as clear as mud!?!?

I appreciate someone who is looking to understand more about these issues because the only way to get them out of the US cattle herd is through education and sound culling practices.
