| Chobani yogurt is imported to Ontario from the New York plant on a limited basis, and want to build a large plant to serve the Canadian market with milk from Canadian cows. But the existing Canadian manufacturers of yogurt, rather then innovate, would rather use the court system to block Chobani from Canada, using the totally bogus arguments in the guise of supply management. They just don't want to see competition from an obviously better product made from someone else.
Chobani needs three times the normal amount of milk as regular yogurt, but doesn't need the butterfat. The plant could use all the surplus skim milk from butter and cheese processing and not need any processor quota from the existing processors, which like production quota (the type the farmers hold) is measured by butterfat content of raw whole milk. The publicity over the trial only fuels the public perception that "government bureaucracies are blocking national distribution of Chobani" and "supply management is a total mess and has got to go". When in fact the farmers are in support of the plant; Chobani sales have grown the market and don't displace other brands.
