Its handy to have 2x4 flat around the bottom edges to anchor the first layer of bales. More so if the deck is slick.

Lay the first bales long way front to back in a single row down the middle. Fill the outsides with bales side by side at right angles to the first bales. With 16 x 32" bales There will be 72 bales on that layer. 3600 pounds for 50 pound bales.

Second layer 5 wide 12 long parallel to the first layer's center. Another 3600 pounds.

Third layer, like the first layer.

Fourth layer like the second layer. 6' rise at this point, total load 7.2 tons.

5th layer like the first layer. 9 tons.

6th layer four wide 12 long. 10.2 tons, 8 feet high.

The can be another top layer, one bale wide bales cross wise connection the inner bales on that layer 6.

Strap it all down. The interlocking alternating bale directions will make it fairly stable. I've loaded like that on a flat bed pickup with a dump bed and it wouldn't dump though it shook going down the road.

More bales per running foot than I ever got on my 8 x 16' rack that sagged seriously with 165 bales but none fell off in a 15 mile haul on gravel roads.
