west central iowa | Answers to some of your questions. Location, location, location. I can't help that our land here is bringing what it is. I'm the 5th generation living in my house that was built in 1892. The farm is over a century old. I can't just leave it behind. What i'm willing to do is figure out a way to make one of those investments work. A neighbor told me small pieces of land leed to bigger pieces down the road. The cattle barn in my oppion will pay for itself faster than the land. Also, i have a holding capacity right now for 999 head. No lagoon yet. If i go over 1000 head, then lots of dirt work and lagoons and permits and paper work. The 5oo head build would be putting me that much closer to all confinement and here, that's what the dnr wants. I plan on feeding cattle for many more years but on the same hand land is getting harder and harder to come by these days. | |
