Its regular checkerplate aluminum - I'd guess around 1/8" but I haven't measured it.

That's getting pretty thin IMO. Not because it can't be welded, but because it might warp all to heck. Were it me, if possible, I would look into using bolts or rivets.

I was a Welder in a former life, so it's not like it you can't weld 1/8" aluminum, but all sorts of unplanned events tend to happen.....and you haven't even really got the experience or the proper tools. Not trying to be a smart a$$, just trying to help.
