Try swapping ends with the tube. the cap will screw on the end that was in the head and vice versa. Ours was doing just fine like that when one of the guys ran over it with a bushcutter!
If that won't do it, you can always cut the ring off the grease tube after you put it in the gun tube and then it'll screw in deeper.
