Macoupin county Illinois | usually get what u pay for, gains can be mediocre in muddy conditions. Gains were very good this past winter. around here the old timers look at me like i'm crazy and laugh when they find out i send cattle to a custom feeder. i don't have a centrally located feedlot. Mine is a high labor feeding operation. all things considered i think that roughly 50 plus dollars per head that the custom feeder gets is cheaper than i can do it. i'm sure this isn't true for everybody as many people in different situations could probably feed cattle for 50 dollars per head, or less. Everybody's labor and facility situation is different. I take the cattle up to 750 lbs. then either sell them or have them custom fed. I like to have them moved by mid march when its crop farming time around here. i'm a small cow calf guy, the feeding is a way to add value to the calf, doesn't always work out that way.
