Check with Jim from Dawn. He knows about patents, and how to get them.
As mentioned you need a real hot idea to make it worth the trouble and expense to get a patent. And then you have to defend the patent as the government will not do it for you. As someone once said, "a patent is only worth what you are willing to pay to defend it."
