If you want to show it to someone make them sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect your product. You can do online patent searches yourself to get ideas on what has been patented. I have worked with patents and did have to send the "letter" to a competitor. Ended up selling to a big manufacturer that had a big bank of attorneys that could defend the patents. Do as much groundwork yourself as possible before consulting an attorney. My experience with patent attorneys started out poor but ended up lucking into one that was semi-retired and had worked in the ag industry. Good luck.
