If he hasn't gotten anything, no colostrum, get some before you feed him. There is some research to show that having nothing to eat delays the closure of their gut to absorb the colostrum. Anything they get speeds it up, so the last thing you want to do is feed it some plain milk or just a small amount of colostrum.

When it is first fed it needs to be fed adeqate amounts of good quality colostrum. Only feed milk if you absolutely cannot get anything else and be prepared for a hard time raising that one!

We've been depending on having plenty of cows calving so we always have some colostrum in the 'frigerator', but they're slowing down now, so when one had a full 5 gallons the other day, I froze a bunch of it to tide me over the summer when there are very few calves born here.
