NE Iowa | I'm in NE Iowa and have rented many pastures in the last 10 years since we own very little non-tillable ground. If it is solid grass like creek bottom ground with no timber then it usually takes about 1.6-1.8 acres per cow calf pair for 5 months grazing (1 May to 1 Oct). Usually about $65-$75 per acre. Lots of pastures around here are half timber and half grass with the timber being worthless for grazing. Those pastures usually work out to around $100-$150 per pair for the 5 months of grazing. Could be more if perfect fences, good corrals, and landlord maybe checks them periodically. Can be a lot less or almost free if fences are terrible, no loading facilities, and water may need to be hauled in. | |
