Subject: RE: grease zerk threads?

SW Minnesota
Usually with that small of a thread on a grease zerk I drill the hole that it will be going a few sizes smaller that the zerk and then use the correct size 1/4" drive socket and extension to force the zerk into the hole as I'm turning it into the hole. (It helps to pack the inside of the socket with a small wad of paper to keep pressure on the zerk). Usually the zerk will cut it's own threads - problem solved. This is how we had to install all the zerks on new Case-IH tillage equipment when I worked equipment setup at a dealership in the early 1990's. Obviously this approach will work only with straight fittings, not the 45 or 90 degree ones.
