All good points.........dairyman, I am going to buy a weigh tape and tape some of these fresh heifers. They just look small/skinny to me. I know the custom guy is limit feeding them but finding a good custom guy is difficult IMHO. Nobody does a better job than the owner. We just don't have the feed/labor/or facilities. We shipped one heifer, she had herpes in all four teats within a month or so of freshening.....granted, she wasn't feeling the best as she had mastitis but when we culled her, she weighed 950#. We were kind of shocked. You also had a good point about culls not weighing as much as healthy cows and that is true enough if they had bad feet or other health issues.
