East Central SD | I've always thought there are plenty of ways a wife can stay home and make money. She has to want to though. It depends on what the operation looks like and what she would like to do. If you have cattle for example you could go to an intensive grazing system that could double carrying capacity and pay maybe $100/hr or more. Look for labor intensive operations that can improve profitability. It may even be as simple as planting a garden and maybe saving a couple thousand at the grocery store and you'll be healthier too. I've always heard "My wife has to get a job for the health insurance". In most situations I could easily find $20,000 worth of inefficiencies in their operations to cover the health insurance. Spreading your own fertilizer vs. hiring it done or doing your own spraying. The Hefty Seed boys in SD wrote a book on $100/hr jobs or something like that. I've never read it but could be of great value to someone in your situation.
