Iowa | As mentioned by others, the nature of the headache, the frequency, the duration, the causes, and the effective treatments can vary from person to person. The commom, over the counter pain medications are often ineffective when it comes to migraines. If the headaches are frequent and severe enough to cause significant problems, it's probably worth going to the doctor to see what can be done.
If the headaches are frequent enough, the doctor could prescribe a daily medication to try as a preventative measure.
Several medications can be perscribed to be taken as a treatment at the beginning of a migraine attack. Imitrex (probably not spelled right) is a common perscription that has been effective for many for several years now. It's also one of the cheaper medications. Some insurance companies will not pay for the more expensive medications until there is some confirmation that the cheaper ones are not an effective option. Maxalt is a newer, more expensive, and sometimes more effective medication, but some insurance companies will not pay for it unless you try someting else first. Maxalt should not be taken too many times in one day, and not too many days in a row. Only limitted amounts are prescribed for a given time period to keep people from taking too much of it. Maxalt costs about $20.00 per pill, but sometimes money is not an issue if the headhache is bad enough or if it happens during planting season.
The doctor is also likely to prescribe somethiing for nausea if that is a problem along with the migraines.
All of these drugs have possible side effects. I would not recommend eating them like candy imho.
Sometimes the doctor could recommend an MRI tolook for other possible causes of the headaches. That costs about $1500.00 and might not be covered by insurance, but it can answer some questions about what is or is not a possible cause of the headaches. | |
