the computer can be set to limit power in certain gears, might want to have a shop check the engine/transmission power settings, have a friend who set his truck up that way, just can't remember if he lowered the power in the lower gears or top. Don't know if that would explain the sputter, I would expect it to just act like it had nothing left to give.
