Subject: Well I found what broke the NH3 shanks!

Western Iowa
Saturday Dad called and wanted to start knifing NH3 for me (I can't sit in the tractor much yet, back issues). Great I said and lined up some tanks for him.

Not even an hour into going I stopped down to check on him and got to help bolt back on 4 knives and replace 2 shanks that broke clean off.

I went home and got a tractor and deep ripper to pull up whatever it was that is in the ground. 3rd pass with the ripper and I tore a shank clean off (so much for spring resets)

Getting worked up at this point, went back home and got the payloader and started digging, after an hour I called in reinforcements with a mini hoe and a tracked skidloader.

Was quite suprised at what we found, It is on bottom ground, the highway has been in the same spot since put in and the old county road was up a lot farther in the field.

We think it was an old box culvert, the concrete mix is unreal for strenth, the sides are about 6 inches thick and I had to take a hard run at it with the payloader to crack it. Only did that once. The bottom is at least 18" thick. It has rebar that is just square smooth bar. The whole thing couldn't have been more than 6" under the dirt. Grandpa bought this farm in 65 and dad can't remember every having any issues there.

Couldn't get it out, had to give up and call local guy with a large hoe, hopefully he can bury it where I will never find it again.
