Subject: RE: Firming wheel 90 series JD drill

Hazelton, Kansas
HC:

We did a total re-bush on an 1895 last summer, and many of the pivot arms were seized. We replaced the bushings, and added Deere's seals to the closing wheel bushings. You drive the new bushings into the housing about 3/16 inch beyond flush with the housing, then install the seals in the same bore. Deere's seals would not fit in the firming wheel arm bushings, due to the narrower housing. All seems OK after one season.

There are several sources of aftermarket seals for the pivot arms, as well.

If you have it apart, it seems logical to insert some sort of seal.

The real problem with ours was the depth control shafts. Every one of them was seized (REALLY seized). We used a 30 ton press to remove them.

We use Deere's water resistant grease (blue) that was recommended to us by our dealer.

We grease the drill about every 4 days.

The whole rebuild process was a lot like work.

Good luck.
