Formerly NE North Dakota, now NW MN
The answer to that will depend on individual situations. If your trees are kind of randomly scattered all over the place, the grain leg might be the thing, provided it's higher than the trees. If you have a massive shelterbelt to contend with, you might be better off putting the repeater at the edge of the shelterbelt to sort of "skirt around" it. If you are really toward the outside of the base-station's range you'll have to have the repeater closer to the base, otherwise I kind of prefer to have it closer to the field.

If I have to take it out into the countryside I like to use our laser-stand. It's not the same as putting it on a grain leg, but you can still get it a good 30 feet in the air.

Are you using the new style antenna? When we upgraded to 3000's, we also upgraded the antennas. The performance of the new ones was way better. They cost though. Look into that before buying the repeater. Maybe you can get by without it.
