| would be to basically do the same thing as pictured above but to have a team of two or more grain carts self powered and gps guided so they work in an automated "teamwork" robotic strategy with the combine. They would guide themselves around the field only passing in the same tire tracks as the combine (docking to the rear of the combine when being filled) and communicate with each other wirelessly about their grain fill level and position. To put my futurist hat on I have to say that there will be a point in time in the not so distant future where productivity increases due to increased machine size (serial- bigger/faster processors) will reach a point where getting bigger is no longer practical and it will become imperative to follow strategies toward greater parallelism (multiple communicating teamworking processors- multi core..etc)- to use a computer example. The problem of trying to maximize combine productivity in a field while at the same time minimizing the tire tracks and total weight of machines in the field when you have multiple moving objects to me seems like a problem that would be better solved by computers. Or to put it another way, the electronic complexity of automation will hit a critical point where it is cheaper than building bigger "iron" and the costs due to the damage this heavier equipment will do to the field.
