Subject: Trash whippers or not?

North Central Iowa

One of our two planters has trash whippers that do not work the way we want, They dig too deep and in damp conditions brings up too much damp soil. We are considering just taking them off. It is a John Deere 7200 16 row 30 inch planter. We plant 90% corn on corn. We rip with an 870 Case ripper with rolling basket in the fall and work ground in the spring with a Krause landsman with rolling baskets. Do you guys think we can get by with out them, there should be very few dirt clods in the way. I am just wondering about the root balls and small rocks making row units bounce. Our other planter had different whippers that we can just set so they skim the surface to move stuff out of the way works really well. The boss is not really wanting to buy new whippers or for that matter spend much on different ones. Just wondering if any of you guys are running with out them and if you aren't do you have problems with the row units bouncing alot.

TIA,

Matt
