| SF, I know it is tough to get back in after selling out. I sold my cows in 2002 partially due to the drought here and mostly due to some major health issues I was having at the time. My cows sold at the bottom of the cattle market. It would have taken 3X what I got for my cows to buy cows back after the drought broke.
I basically sold down to my yearling heifers and coming 2 yr olds. Stock water was a big issue in those days which has since been remedied. I have good neighbors who kept my cattle fed and watered through the winter months until I was able to function again the next spring. 2003 is the first year I had gone to late spring calving and have never regretted it.
Ever since then I've been rebuilding my herd by keeping my own replacements. As Jim mentioned, it's a very slow process that way. I'm almost at capacity now and facing more health issues that will likely force me to quit altogether. I hope if I must bail out over the next couple years or so the prices will hold up.
