Buffalo IL
I have a few minutes before church. I think there are several reasons why the cow herd has declined and is still declining even with record prices. The cow herd was declining still before the drought even with record calf prices. Revenues from crop acres have surpassed pasture for decades, but is that from the crops being truly more profitable or is it from the government programs keeping the revenue higher. CRP, crop insurance, LDP's, ethanol mandates, etc. For example look at all of CRP acres that are getting gov't payments to leave it fallow, because it became more profitable than grain and/ or pasture. Everyone complains about fence costs, but it is a 20 to 30 year improvement. In my opinion, is it really any different than putting a tile in a field. Please continue on I like all of the posts and others opinions.
