Wroxeter Ontario | A very interesting subject. For our farm, 2 brothers and I farming for 20 years, starting with Grandpa's stuff. Old and small. Lots of repairs, down time !! Slowly upsized, upgraded as we could make the payments. Each move was a stretch on the pocket book. It always feels good to finally have something paid for, Right? But then its usually needing more repairs and has depreciated in value. What you really need to look at is cost per acre to run this stuff. Lets say annual payment plus repairs plus cost of down time divided by acres covered. We trade for newer if the payments are close to the same as older plus, plus etc. And don't forget the value of warranty on new. Our repair bill almost dried up last year running 2 new tractors and 1 new combine. (First ever for us). Problems? Call the dealer. New stuff will have issues for sure but you're not hung with the bill. | |
