Upstate Ny | in our area dairy farms are predominate. its the same thing here as it is in grain or hay or an other business. the biggest factor in dairy is the type of land you have and how much milk you make. those that have good land and high yields and can do a little cash cropping on the side do very well. others play in the mud, spend all day in the barn and have no other income other than the dairy struggle to make ends meet. i just had a young kid who wants to farm it move on and i told him to make sure you dont buy a wet farm cause your going to struggle the rest of your life. here we also supplement our income by doing equipment repairs for others in the winter and i also do bookkeeping partime for the local co-op.
