Morris, IL | Your have to put hours on the machine, covering hundreds of acres to pay for new and ever just middle aged equipment any more, spread the cost per acre out as much as possible. Also in my mind, eliminate recreational tillage, ask your self what return on investment that tillage tool or tillage pass will have to your farm. One thing we did was partner up with a relative on a tractor similar to your example. Put 350-400 hours on it a year and i really thing we should have 500 but it's somewhat newer than all other equipment and when we need it it just runs which is worth something as well. Also, that tractor either has to last 25-30 years or be worth 50% purchase price when selling.
