They sense in a cone shape , the further from the sensor the wider the cone , and near as I can tell about 2' ahead of the sensor at about 30". traveling at even 10 mph there is no way the boom can react fast enough , by moving them ahead , at least they are "seeing" changes in terrain further ahead of the boom , giving more time to react.
