You can raise the surface drive up too. Just crank it up. It will lift the center just not the edge. Makes for easier starting. I would probally go with a ring drive if you had to fill the silo many times a year like we used too. We would fill with hayledge 5 or 6 cuttings and it was a pain babysitting the surface drive for 4 days after each cutting. But when we filled with corn silage it only took one start, then set it and forget it. We always kept the cable loose unless it was gonna freeze then crank it up off the pack a little for easier starting. We never had a problem with a hump from the chain. You have to adjust the chain, easy to do. We just kept a adjustable wrench up in the silo for that. I guess it depends on how much you are fedding out to be concerned about speed of unloading. Towards the end of using the silo we where pulling 16 tons a day out of the silo.
