3 to 5 hours! Wow! I think you may be able to pay for the unloader just with savings of electricity or certainly time and electricity!

Chains do wear out, but they're comparitively easy to repair or replace compared to an auger. What may be more complex is the gearbox drive for the chain, but we have very litte trouble out of those components on the ones we have. Some of those boxes are old enough to vote and have had several drive sprockets replaced on them over the years with only a check of the gear oil each time they're put into a full silo. When the seals begin to leak oil, we use corn head grease in them instead, that usually keeps them going another few years just fine.

The chain that is used on the surface drive models tends to get worn on the backside of the link where the sprocket touches it. It will get a flat spot worn on it which you can readily see and when it wears in about 1/8", it's time to replace the chain before a link breaks. If one breaks, take a fork and clean out a space under the unloader main frame and lay out the chain. loosen the adjustment screw and if you will hook the chain over both sprockets with the open space at the top in the chain trough, you can snatch the loose end that leads to the wall end of the frame and it will slide the telescoping frame in so you can hook up the links.
