Most of the smaller gators are afraid of humans and will slither away in the water, if you get too close. I did encounter a large gator like FL Veggie took a picture of in his post in MT. Same behavior, he was not afraid, and had an inviting smile on his face, that said, "Come pet me!" We chose to find another area to fish, and leave him be.
