Subject: RE: Grid vs Zone sampling

When zone sampling first came about, one of the main selling points was that you could save money with zone vs. grid. The theory behind it is that you can take areas of a field having common features such as soil type or typography, sample those features as one unit, and save yourself money. Reality though is somewhat different because oftentimes fertility does not correlate well with the features being sampled. When that is the case, it is better to increase the density of your sampling scheme and sample by a grid. I would not sample anything greater than a 2.5 acre grid because the more samples you pull, the greater the accuracy of the results.
