I think deere is afraid that if the customers know too much, they won't need to call the techs and have them come to the field for $80/hr. I couldn't be a tech, I hardly have the patience to explain it to my partners who are a generation or so older than me. No way could I do it all day, it is three times harder over the phone too, I often stop what I am doing and go to another machine just to push two buttons and leave.

There is a correlation to the amount of buttons pushed and the age of the button pusher. Older guys are scared to press a button and screw up, younger guys just push buttons until they get what they want.
