Subject: another angle for lack of grazing?

several posts have wondered about what to feed the nations cow herd...

I don't know how many of the available grass acres go towards yearling development. I'll take a wild stab... 30%??
I wonder if it'd be more time/fuel/resource efficient to feed light calves a TMR in feedlots rather than back to grass.

around here, as pasture rents crowd 300 bucks for a cow calf, (or 60/month) and historically, yearlings run right at 1/2 of that. I wonder if economics will dictate some 'dedicated yearling' operations to start running cows?

Im just looking at a lot less tons of feed needing to be hauled, fed, and then hauled out again.... compared to doing it to a pen of cow/calves.
