Newberry knife works better if the scrotum is fairly large so you can grasp it and still place the blade beside your thumb. Usually need to pinch the scrotum flat grasping it from the sides with thumb and forefinger below the testicles (push them up and pull scrotum down so you get it cut from near top to tip. Place blade next to thumb so it is in center of scrotum if you could look from side. MOVE the holding hand as you close newberry knife to pierce blade through scrotum. Place it on top of your other hand on the grip of the tool. It's safe there! Pull straight down, do not pull to rear or you 'll leave a "cup" on the bottom of the scrotum as the blade comes out before it reaches the tip. Newberry knife generally gives best drainage of all since the scrotum is split lengthwise at least half way up if not all the way up. Just removing the bottom of the scrotum it can swell shut easier and impede drainage.

Most important thing of all is to work the testicles down and stretch the cord so it parts only after being stretched a long way. This does 2 things, most important one is to stop bleeding. The stretched arteries and veins will snap back when they break, spasm and clot off much quicker than if they are snapped or cut off. The second thing is if you do get bleeding, if it isn't enough to kill him, the blood will be inside the calf's abdomen and it can be reabsorbed over the next few days to a week. The drill tools may be capable of doing this as well, or better, but I have no experience with them.

Or stretch them down and then use an emasculator on each cord. You want to stretch the cords far enough that you don't cut the cord right at the top of the testcle and also so that you don't wind up crushing scrotum with the top of the jaws instead of crushing cord! Usually want one that's sort of dull! Might want to cut some natural fiber rope a few dozen times before using a new one. The emasculator has a crushing part and a cutting part of the jaws. If you don't have a lot of tension on the testicle when you close the jaws, it'll crush and hold the cord before it cuts through. Keep it closed tightly on the cord for a few seconds or longer depending on how big the bull is. Also remember, "nut to nut". The emasculator has a thumb screw or nut on one side which must be down toward the testicle or the crush will be on the testicle end and the cut will be on the cord end!
