Buffalo IL
I use a callicrate bander and band after weaning. It takes forever for the bag to drop off, but I'm in no hurry. The calves stay on feed though and I have never lost one. I do give them the tetanus shot. I use to have them cut by the vet and lost one once to tetanus and they use to go off feed. I tried to band at birth one year and that was quite an experience and discovered the cows head was harder than mine. I calve in the pasture and i can't always even get them caught to get them tagged. If I can't catch them to get them tagged it is a good sign that they are healthy and fine. If you can band them at birth you need to catch them later and implant them I believe at 45 days of age.
