Subject: Re: Checking old hydraulic valves

Brisbane, Australia
Sometimes the little shaft in the centre of the solenoid coil housing itself gets corrosion around it and it won't let it move freely - erratic steering response as a result. Also have had the main spool itself get "furry" edges and it can cause the same thing. Pull the coils off and remove the round assembly from the main body of the valve and free up that little shaft (dirt can get in the end and lock it up). Be mindful when you do unscrew it that there is a washer and a spring in there - don't drop them in the dirt.... When you take the both solenoid ends off you can use a finger either side to push/pull on the end of the spool to get it moving freely as they do stick over time. If it is slightly hesitant at all to move pull it out completely and debur those edges using either the finest emery paper or some metal polish.....would have saved buying a new valve for another 12 months when you will most likely have to do it again but I guess you have a backup when the new one starts to play up in 5 or 6 years time......have had to do this to a few valves over the years. Only time we've ever replaced the solenoid completely is when the coils corruded and expanded so much they split and simply stopped working - was cheaper the replace the whole thing then.
