very very possible! The only thing modern dairies lack is 'fun time' for the cows. I never saw one just 'goofing off'. LOL The feed, enviroment, water.. everything is about as perfect as can be. These were milked 3x day. So I think there was just enough time to eat, chew cud, sleep about a half hour, then back to the parlor.
But another thing I always wondered was when we would lute 50-100 cows each week, and when those ol gals came into heat... if the cows doing the riding weren't flipping something too!
We had them grouped according to their production.. and fed accordingly. So that alone would have long time breds, short breds, open cows, all in a particular group. (about 120 per pen)
