Manitoba | Walls in your basement that are away from the outside cement walls may need some way to allow for the floor shfting up and down. We're on heavy clay soils and even with a properly built basement there can be shifting issues. Our house was built in the 70s and when my dad finished the basement he put walls with an expansion gap. When we changed some walls in the late 90s and my carpenter friend told me not to bother because nothing would be shifting anymore and build solid walls. Now we're sorry. Our kitchen floor is pushed up at least a 1/2" even though the basement floor looks perfect. The expansion space is just a gap between the top of your wall and the joists above connected by large nails. | |
