Chester, GA and Griffith, IN
Goodluck on your trip, I had some fun college days at Statesboro for a couple of years before transfering on.

I wouldn't recommend Paula Dean's restaurant, never cared for her food, it is good but it is just standard southern food.

Vinnie Van Go go's pizza place is pretty darn good, mellow mushroom has great stone cooked pizza but it is a chain so likely not something you want to visit if you are looking for more out of the ordinary.

Tybee Island has a good beach, Charleston has some good beaches in SC as well, Jekyll Island is not too much farther from Savannah and is much quieter than the others, there is some construction going on but fewer people at least.

Also if you like wine there are a few wineries in south georgia, one makes a very good peach wine, http://www.butterduckswinery.com/
