JD's Plus 50 is just catching up to the rest of the industry. CJ-4 oils came out in 07, and JD never saw a need to produce an oil until Plus 50. It is true that it is not API licensed, so don't use it in any engine other than JD if there is a warranty on it. The warranty on any other diesel engine can easily be void since you would not be using an API licensed product.
Check out Cenex oil. Top of the line quality CJ-4, it comes with a warranty that won't cost an arm and a leg and is a better price than JD. With my warranty, there is no deductible and more importantly, you don't need to prove that the oil caused a problem! The warranty on my new tractor only cost $299, then I got $200 back in oil coupons. Best part is that it lasts for 9 yrs/9000 hours.
I'd rather buy oil from an oil company, and my equipment from and equipment company!
