You beef guys crack me up. Makes me want to get into beef. Any "premie" Holstein calf will absolutely die without human intervention. Also, anytime we had what I call an abortion storm, the vet was useless. We had two instances in 25 years where we had what I would call too many abortions. Sent in fetuses, sent in blood.....never got an answer. Abortions went away on their own. The dams never showed any illness.

I know beefers are different, but when I was a kid we had lepto in our Holsteins, and they got sick and aborted afterwards. But I remember them being sick first, and the abortions came later.
