| The Bourgault 3710 has a greater compound angle, compared to the Deere (this does reduce hair-pinning, I have seen the difference in side by side tests). The Bourgault AHP scraper (when fitted) on the 3710 also helps reduce hair-pinning also, but it comes with significantly more soil disturbance. The disc diameter is greater on the 3710 (20.5" with a 5mm thickness I believe, compared to the Deere at 18" with 5mm). In most cases, larger blades have more challenges cutting residue, as the soil entry angle is less. However, as a result of the compound angle and sufficient weight per opener on the 3710, I have not seen this to be an issue.
Most (not all) hairpinning is caused by one or more of the factors below:
1) Dull disc blades
2) Poor residue spreading with the combine (2X residue in one area, none in another).
3) Harrowing (some guys still want to harrow, which knocks most of the residue down on the ground. Leave it standing as tall as possible is what I suggest, so you have to cut through less material).
4) Not enough weight on seeder
5) Seeding depth set too shallow (it goes back to the disc entry topic I mentioned earlier).
