Subject: RE: boron for corn

Boron is a tricky nutrient for testing in corn. I have done tissue sampling at the V6 stage they almost always come back deficient. Borons main job is germination of pollen grains and growth of pollen tubes. i.e. pollen. The corn plant will start take up boron before right before tassel, I think this is the main reason test almost always show short. Unless the test is after the VT stage is when boron appears in the corn. If you have barren plants( which is a sign of boron deficiency ) in late summer i would take a tissue sample to confirm and look at nutrient deficiencies. If you want to do an application of boron just make sure you dont over apply otherwise corn yield will take a big hit.. hope this helps
