Subject: Somewhat better execution

Pittsburg, Kansas

A somewhat better execution of a similar idea is the White 4-175, 4-210 and several other models. The cab was on the front half instead of the rear but still kind of the same light, nimble 4wd articulated "row crop" concept. Weak points were the drivelines and the v-8 cat engines (and a few other minor annoyances). Although many of us never had any problems with the engines, they had a severely tarnished reputation and I think caused people to shy away from them. Deere tried the idea in the 8430, 8630-40-50 series but ended up with a bastardized articulated 4wd that was too heavy and lumbering to be a row crop tractor, though it tried and not really a very good attempt at a real big tractor 4wd because of lack of power. I think White came as close to anyone of "getting it right" but like many of their products it was an "almost" and ended up with enough weak points and weak company that they never took off. If Deere would have done something like the 4-175 instead of the 8430 everyone might be driving articulated tractors today instead of the monster MFWD's. I think that is a bit of agricultural history where we screwed up. Those were really neat tractors for their day.

In my opinion - I'm sure others may disagree.
